"And two savagely negative reports I am loosely interpreting here to mask identities. One describes a publisher that started out well, then ran out of money, used royalties to cover operating expenses, and made excuses to cover that up. The other describes bad editing, blatant favoritism, and a threatening attitude toward those who even question things. Both reports are detailed and persuasive. There is also a story circulating about how there was a firm offer to buy 10,000 copies of an author's books, with no refunds, but the publisher essentially turned its back on the deal. Such an example, if true, suggests that the printer might have demanded payment up front, and the publisher wouldn't or couldn't do that, so let it go. So much for that author's prospects. Beware. July 2010 update: And an angry response from the publisher, who wanted the bad report removed immediately. Lotsa luck there."

June 2014 update: A report of fouled up statements of account and failure to pay royalties for whole quarters. Stonewalling of authors who query about this. It may take legal action to get information. Beware.

Absolute Write

"I completely relate to your experience with CB. It sounds very much like my own. Lots of things going awry and poor communication. Good luck with getting your rights back. If they've pulled your books, it pretty much has to happen. Interestingly, you're the third author I know of who has requested their rights be returned. Perhaps CB will start to get the message. Thanks for the info about other CB authors on facebook. I'll definitely check that out. Best wishes for better publishing experiences in the future."

Where Writers Meet

"I've been following that thread too. I belong to a writers group and one of our members is currently trying to get away from CB. She's been locked in a contract with them for almost 4 years now, due to them taking a full year to release her ebook. They haven't done any promotion, and there weren't any sales for a couple of years. It's only thanks to another publisher that has promoted some of my friend's other titles, that she now has a readership, and the book with Champagne, is finally starting to sell because of it. But that's not all. Champagne has threatened her with legal action if she joins the AW forum and tells about her experiences. She forwarded me all the correspondence with CB, and if she gives me the okay, I will share it on the AW thread. My friend is also puzzled as to why some CB authors have been released from their contracts, and others, like herself, have not. This would seem to be somewhat unfair behaviour on the part of CB. I'll keep you posted."
